The Truth about Freedom

Series: Unchained

In our current sermon series, we are reminded that because of the power of the Gospel, we are UNCHAINED ... set free to live free lives as believers in Jesus Christ. As we look through the lessons contained in the book of Galatians, we get an opportunity to realize our full spiritual potential through this freedom we enjoy. This week's morning message came from Galatians 5:1-15 as Paul teaches the Galatian Christians important truths about the freedom they have in Christ and through Christ.

Episode Notes

BIG IDEA  ...

Freedom is fragile … Don’t lose it by being selfish.

Galatians 5:1-5, For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

1.  Free people don’t try to bribe God for blessing.

Galatians 5:2-3, Look:I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law.

Hebrews 13:20-21, Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

2.  Free people keep depending on God’s grace.

Galatians 5:4, You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

Romans 5:20-21, Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

3.  Free people look forward to Christ’s return.

Galatians 5:5, For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

Galatians 2:20, I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Galatians 5:6-15, For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves! For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

NEXT STEP ...

Love and serve one another
