Proverbs 4:1-9

Episode Notes

Introduction: In scripture, we discover God’s expectations for a Christian father. For a father to be their best, they need to be Godly men; men who believe in God, fear God, love God, and serve God. They need to be men who are growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

1. God expects dads to teach.
Proverbs 4:1 – Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.

Proverbs 22:6 – Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. A child, thoroughly taught, never departs from the teaching received. Children are products of the home.

2. What should dad teach?
a. Teach the Divine Word.
II Timothy 1:5 – I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

b. Teach children to be industrious.
Proverbs 10:5 – He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

c. Teach children boundaries.
Proverbs 29:15, 17 – 15 A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.

d. Teach by a good example.
Proverbs 13:22 – A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Conclusion: The task of child rearing is greater than dad. Ideally, it is a task shared by mother and father. Ideally, mother and father are committed to Christ.
