GIDEON - Part Two

Series: Right in God's Eyes

Frank Foreman

Romans 10:8-9, But what does it say? “The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the Word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. ---------- As we continue our look at the life and judgeship of Gideon, we look to his growing faith in God's plan for his life. The amazing aspect of it is how God uses Gideon's fear to not only help him to grow in faith but also to understand that overcoming his fears is an exercise in taking his eyes off of his own abilities and opportunities so that he might fix his eyes on God for deliverance from those fears. ---------- It is the story woven throughout the book of Judges--God brings deliverance to His people even when they don't deserve it and even in situations where they don't feel worthy or qualified to accomplish God's purpose. ---------- Judges, perhaps more than any other book of the Bible, shows us the failure of humanity to live out God's call on our lives. The book's final words sum up the picture: "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)

Episode Notes

(Journal) Judges 6:33-40

Big Idea:  God is graciously willing to build my faith when I am fearful.

Romans 10:8-9, But what does it say? “The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the Word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

1.  I will seek God’s guidance without putting Him to the test.

Deuteronomy 6:16-17, You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah. You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies and His statutes, which He has commanded you.

Matthew 6:9-10, Pray then like this: “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

John 16:13, When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.

2.  I will stop being afraid of people and what they can do to me.

Ecclesiastes 12:13, The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

Revelation 14:7, And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come, and worship Him who made Heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Hebrews 13:5-6, Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my Helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Next Step:  I will ask God to help me take my eyes off of myself….

And fix them on Him.

Hebrews 12:1-2, Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the Founder and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
