He Knows Your Name

Series: The God Who Rescues

September 12, 2020

In this next message, we see the steps of fear that led to the enslavement of the Israelite nation. The fears and suspicions that drove Pharaoh to move the Israelites from favored guests to indentured servants were the same ones that led him to call for the killing of the Hebrew baby boys. Yet, even in the midst of such tragedy, God brought about blessings and ultimately (spoiler alert) a delivered of their nation.

Episode Notes

PAUSE: What significant event happened in 1620?

Genesis 15:13, Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.”

Acts 7:6, And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

Exodus 1:8-22

Pause:  Who is mentioned by name?  Why?

BIG IDEA:

Fear of God leads to blessing.

Genesis 3:10, I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid...

Hebrews 12:28-29, Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

Proverbs 1:7, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Deuteronomy 10:12, And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul...

Deuteronomy 10:20, You shall fear the LORD your God. You shall serve Him and hold fast to Him...

1.  Blessed to be part of God’s rescue.

Acts 5:29, But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.“

2.  Blessed to survive Pharaoh’s wrath.

Daniel 3:16-20, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

3.  Blessed to have a family of their own.

Romans 8:15, For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

The similarities are heart wrenching...

  • The subtle infanticide came before open infanticide.
  • The subtle infanticide was selective.
  • The subtle infanticide was ethnically specific.

NEXT STEP:

Fear God and prayerfully get involved.

Memory Verse:  Exodus 1:17, But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.
