Series: You've Heard It Said

October 15, 2017
Frank Foreman

The eighth sermon in the series of messages on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7. In His teaching, Jesus clearly teaches that as followers of Christ, reflecting his character, we are called to live above the expectations of the world ... that we are called to meet more than the minimum requirements.

Episode Notes

Matthew 7:7-12

We, the church, are a FAMILY ...  and we do life together within the context of RELATIONSHIPS

1.  The PROMISE of God.

Matthew 7:7-8 ... Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

God gives us enough TRUTH that we're responsible and enough MYSTERY that we're dependent.

James 1:5 ... If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

2.  The Pattern of God.

Matthew 7:9-11 ... Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask him!

As a CHILD of God there ought to be something of me that DISPLAYS something of Him.

Ephesians 5:1-2 ... Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.  And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3.  The PURPOSE of God.

Matthew 7:12 ... So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Love is much more than not doing NEGATIVE things, it is doing some POSITIVE things.

Exodus 20:1-17

CHALLENGE:  Think of those you LOVE and care for most …  Meet their greatest NEED
