The next day [John] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God...” There are many different ways in which Jesus Christ is portrayed in the Scriptures. Much like His Father, these depictions give us insight into who He was, His purpose, etc. ---------- Probably none of these designations carry such a harsh reality as "The Lamb of God." While we can often associate lambs as being precious and/or helpless, given the hindsight of Scripture, we know that this title was given to Him for a very different, sobering reason. He would be the lamb of sacrifice that would be killed to atone for sins.

Episode Notes

1. The people wanted a physical Savior.

(Journal) John 6:14-15, When the people saw the sign that He had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” Perceiving then that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.

Matthew 2:1-2, Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.”

2.  The people needed a spiritual Sacrifice.

(Journal) John 20:30-31, Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

Isaiah 53:10a, Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush Him; He has put Him to grief; when His soul makes an offering for guilt….

3.  The people received the Lamb of God.

(Journal) John 1:29, The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Matthew 1:21, She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

Big Idea:  Jesus came to deal with sin.

Next Step:  Direct your heart’s attention to Jesus…. Behold Him every day.
