Not Far

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

What is lacking in your spiritual life? If the Lord's statement to you was, "You are not far from the kingdom," what would be the thing that would be keeping you from being fully included. ---------- Most of us can list the things that keep us close: connection to a church family, a consistent prayer life, study and knowledge of His Word, etc. But defining and/or admitting that which holds us back can sometimes be more difficult. ---------- The writer of Hebrews reminds us that we must, "...throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles." Otherwise, we may just find ourselves not far from the kingdom, but not truly in it.

Episode Notes

Big Idea: God’s love for us is nothing less than wholehearted….

Are we returning His love with halfhearted devotion?

1.  How do we view the OT Law?

(Journal) Mark 12:28

2nd Timothy 3:16-17, All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Galatians 3:23-26, Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

2.  How did Jesus fulfill the Law?

(Journal) Mark 12:29-31

Matthew 5:17-18,  Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until Heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Colossians 2:11-15, In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.

This He set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him.

3.  How close are we to the Kingdom?

(Journal) Mark 12:32-34

Matthew 7:21-23, Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in Heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Isaiah 29:13-14, And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth

and honor Me with their lips, while their hearts are far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment taught by men, therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder;

MSG:  “These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their hearts aren’t in it. Because they act like they’re worshiping Me but don’t mean it, I’m going to step in and shock them awake, astonish them, stand them on their ears. The wise ones who had it all figured out will be exposed as fools. The smart people who thought they knew everything will turn out to know nothing.”

Next Step:  What is the one thing I lack?
