Popular or Purposeful

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

May 23, 2021
Frank Foreman

How do we define success? It varies from one person to the next. Sometimes, success is viewed through the lens of finances--do I make enough money to be considered successful? Other times it is view by accomplishment--can I make to the CEO office? Can I get my masters degree? My doctorate ---------- Of course, as Christians it is important to remain grounded in the truth of His Word. To do that, it becomes necessary to view success through the eyes of Christ. How did He define success. How did Christ quantify achievement? ---------- Frank continues our current sermon series looking at Jesus' definition of successful ministry from Mark 3. Together we catch a glimpse His clear motivation for ministry and perhaps gain an understanding of what our enthusiasm and determination should be pointed toward as we minister on His behalf today!

Episode Notes

BIG IDEA: Jesus’ popular appeal was fueled by His miracles, though popularity was not His goal.

1.  Successful ministry is not defined by popularity.

  • We gather with unselfish hearts determined to give rather than to get?

(Journal) Mark 3:7-12

Matthew 11:20-24, Then He began to denounce the cities where most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent...  “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to Heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Matthew 7:13-14, Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

2.  Successful ministry is defined by purpose.

Mark 2:17

Hebrews 1:3
