The Consequences of Pride

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

Jesus taught about humility in a very practical way. Yet, sometimes people didn't understand the magnitude of what he was saying. Even those who were close to him, such as His disciples, missed that teaching. One of their most common arguments centered on the question of which of them was the greatest or would be the greatest one day. ---------- One of the reasons Christ taught so clearly about the dangers of pride was because of its fundamental connection to so much of our struggle with sin. By seeking humility through our relationship to Christ, we can better avoid the temptations to succumb to sinful urges and desires.

Episode Notes

Big Idea: Jesus taught about humility by both instruction and example….

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.

Philippians 2:5 (NIV)

(Journal) Mark 9:30-32

1.  Pride Destroys Unity:

(Journal) Mark 9:33-34

  • Pride is the tool Satan uses to split churches and splinter relationships.

Philippians 1:27-28, Only let your manner of life be worthy of the Gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.

2.  Pride Forfeits Honor:

(Journal) Mark 9:35

  • Pride keeps people from obtaining the very honor that they seek.

Matthew 6:1-5, Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in Heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

3.  Pride Rejects Deity:

(Journal) Mark 9:36-37

  • Pride warns us that how we treat each other is how we treat Jesus.

Matthew 25:40, And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to Me.”

4.  Pride Creates Exclusivity:

(Journal) Mark 9:38-40

  • Pride puts people into groups placing some in and some out.

1st Corinthians 1:10, I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

(Journal) Mark 9:41

Next Step:  Express humility through small acts of kindness.

Proverbs 22:4, The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life.
