The Curtain of the Temple Was Torn

Series: COME Follow ... GO Make

November 11, 2018

Week 11 of the series on discipleship. Over the next three months, we are looking intently at the book of Matthew; specifically we will be focused on the teachings of Jesus directly related to discipleship. The 60' tall, 4" thick curtain in the temple dividing the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was a barrier not just literally but also figuratively between God and man. At that moment when Jesus died on the cross, the curtain was torn in a moment, allowing us to enter in through the blood of Jesus Christ, giving us access to holiness through grace. In this message, Frank leads us through understanding the power of this symbol and what it means for us as disciples/followers of Christ.

Episode Notes

Matthew 27:51, And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.

Jesus tore down the barrier between a holy God and sinful people.

1.  Jesus is our new High Priest.

Hebrews 7:27, He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for His own sins and then for those of the people, since He did this once for all when He offered up Himself.

2.  Jesus is our perfect Sacrificial Lamb.

Hebrews 9:12, He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

3.  Jesus is our permanent Access to God.

Hebrews 10:19-22, Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh, and since we have a Great Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Challenge:  Provoke someone this week … toward love for others and doing good.

Hebrews 10:24-25, And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
