The Truth about Divorce

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

We recognize that there are things today that are more commonplace today than in the time that the Scriptures were written. However, it would be wrong for us to assume that just because society has changed that God's Word has adapted to allow for sin. ---------- Today, half of all marriages performed in the United States will end in divorce; and the statistics for second and third marriages plummet significantly. It leads to broken families and blended families that become more the norm than the exception. --------- While we would be right to remember that divorce is not an unpardonable sin, it is important to remember that it is indeed classified in God's Word as a sin and something that He hates to see. With divorce becoming so much more prevalent in our world, it is important for Christians to know God's teaching and the significance of grace in all circumstances. ---------- Frank takes on this difficult situation by getting into the Bible (Mark 10:1-12) and allowing its authority to be the standard of morality and behavior. We hope that as you join us and hear the Word of God taught, that His Spirit would guide you into an understanding that helps you to grow in wisdom and in truth.

Episode Notes

Malachi 2:16 (RSV), “For I hate divorce,” says the Lord the God of Israel….

Big Idea:  God hates divorce.

(Journal) Mark 10:1-12

Ephesians 5:25-27, Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

God hates divorce:

1.  Because marriage is a forever commitment.

(Verse 6)

Luke 9:62, Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

2.  Because marriage is an unbreakable bond.

(Verses 7-8)

Roman 8:38-39, For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3.  Because marriage is God’s divine work.

(Verse 9)

Ephesians 2:8-9, For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Next Step:  For better or worse….

Let’s pledge to teach our children what this commitment means.

Genesis 2:20-25, The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man He made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
